Men’s Health Month: Common Injuries Men Face

Certain orthopedic injuries are, unfortunately, more common in men than other injuries. June is Men’s Health Month, and during this month, our team at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation would like to discuss the injuries common in men and the treatment options for optimal healing and rehabilitation. Continue reading to discover some of the common orthopedic injuries men face.

Common Injuries Men Face

It’s crucial for men to take their health seriously. From age-related joint pain to athletic injuries, differences in structural anatomies cause men to be more susceptible to certain orthopedic injuries than women. Recognizing these factors is crucial for prompt diagnosis and treatment. Here are some of the most common injuries in men treated by our orthopedist in Brooklyn.

  • Upper Extremity Fracture – Male athletes and handymen are at a higher risk of upper extremity fractures. Extreme sports, physically strenuous occupations, and projects around the house can lead to more fractures.
  • Achilles Tendon Injury – Men are three times as likely to experience an Achilles tendon injury than women. An Achilles tendon injury is excruciating and can limit mobility. Male athletes in sports like football, basketball, and track are more susceptible to this type of injury.
  • Distal Bicep Tear – Men are more susceptible to distal bicep tears. The distal bicep tendon is the tendon that connects the bicep to the forearm. Injuries to the distal bicep tendon often occur during heavy lifting, and men who smoke or have weakened muscles may be at a higher risk for developing this injury.
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries – The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that help rotate the arm in its socket. From overuse to an auto accident, rotator cuff injuries are prevalent male orthopedic injuries. The major rotator cuff injuries are tendonitis, shoulder bursitis, and rotator cuff tears.
