What Is Internal Fixation?

Many different causes can lead to a broken or fractured bone. Falls, collisions, and even physical activity can lead to you sustaining this type of injury. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, our team has seen this happen to patients in the past. If you’ve recently suffered from a broken bone, our Orthopedist Manhasset NY may recommend internal fixation to correct the problem.

xray orthopedic manhasset

How Will Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY Perform Internal Fixation?

As the name would suggest, internal fixation involves invasive surgery to help a broken or fractured bone heal properly. Until this century, doctors relied solely on casts and splints to help broken and fractured bones heal. However, thanks to advancements in medical technology, our Orthopedist Manhasset NY can perform internal fixation to correct the issue at hand. Internal fixation can include the use of the following tools:

  • Plates.
  • Screws.
  • Nails and rods.
  • Wires and pins.

Why Is Internal Fixation Necessary?

Bone breaks or fractures that are severe enough will need to be surgically set into place to allow for a full recovery. They may also need to be held in place until they are fully healed through the use of the previously listed internal fixation methods. If bones are not set and held correctly, permanent damage can take place, leading to copious amounts of pain and discomfort.

How Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation Will Help

At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, we know the intricacies that go into healing broken bones. Our orthopedist is well versed in a variety of non-surgical and surgical remedies including internal fixation.

Contact Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY

Those suffering from bone breaks and fractures need to seek treatment promptly. Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY will help determine if internal fixation is needed to help you make a full recovery. To learn more about what goes into this treatment method, or to schedule an appointment, contact our team at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation today.

What Are My Limitations With Osteoporosis?

Have you recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis? If this is the case, it’s common to wonder how this will affect your everyday life moving forward. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, we want the effects to be as limited as possible. Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY will share details on the impact that this condition can have, as well as what can be done to manage these effects.

osteoporosis orthopedic manhasset ny

How Can Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY Help Your Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects your bones. Those suffering from this condition cannot create enough new bone tissue to keep up with their body’s demand. This shortage of new living tissue causes the bones to become frail and brittle, leaving them more susceptible to structural damage.

Symptoms To Watch For

Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY warns that during the initial phases of osteoporosis, there are often little to no symptoms. That is why when you do start to display symptoms, you need to reach out to our staff for help right away. If you notice you’ve developed any of the below, please don’t hesitate to contact us:

  • A stooped posture.
  • Noticeable loss of height.
  • Back pain caused by spinal issues.
  • Having bones that suffer breaks and fractures easily.

Will I Face Limitations?

The first question on many people’s minds after being diagnosed with osteoporosis is whether or not they will face limitations as a result of the complications’ effects on the body. While osteoporosis does not necessarily have to cause limitations, our Orthopedist Manhasset NY recommends making various lifestyle changes to help manage this condition and prevent injuries from taking place. These changes may include just a few of the following:

  • Quitting smoking.
  • Limiting your alcohol and caffeine intake.
  • Consume more calcium and vitamin D.
  • Work to make your living environment “fall-proof” (place guardrails in your bathroom, remove clutter from walkways, secure all electrical cords in walking areas, etc).

Schedule An Appointment With Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY

Living with osteoporosis does not need to be a death knell for your quality of life. By making a few changes to how you live, you’ll greatly limit the chances of suffering from the bone breaks and fractures commonly linked with this condition. To learn more about the changes you need to make, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with our Orthopedist Manhasset NY.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

How Can Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY Help You?

Are you someone who tends to lean on their elbows throughout the day? Have you also started to experience numbness and tingling in this area? Signs like these two often point to the condition known as cubital tunnel syndrome. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, we’re well versed in this condition. Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY will let you know the likely cause of this condition and how treatment can be administered.

What Is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Cubital tunnel syndrome is also known as ulnar neuropathy. It takes place when the ulnar nerve becomes compressed. The ulnar nerve runs close to the surface of your skin, and travels through a part of the elbow that most people refer to as the “funny bone.” Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY warns that any of the below stimulants can lead to the development of this condition:

  • Leaning on your elbow too often.
  • Keeping your elbow bent for an extended period.
  • Abnormal bone growth.
  • Repetitive overuse of the elbow, such as the repeated twisting from a baseball pitcher.

Symptoms Of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

When you begin to experience pain in the elbow, it’s crucial to have the issue diagnosed and corrected immediately. The longer you let an elbow issue linger, the more likely it will increase in severity. Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY can help prevent this from happening. Our team will perform a full evaluation of your condition to offer a proper diagnosis before creating a treatment plan. Some of the symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of cubital tunnel syndrome include:

  • Pain.
  • Numbness.
  • Tingling that radiates to the fingers.
  • Inability to pinch thumb and little finger.
  • Issues with your grip.

Treatment Options

Once it has been determined that cubital tunnel syndrome is to blame for your problems, a treatment plan can start. There are various methods our Orthopedist Manhasset NY can utilize to relieve your symptoms and get you back to full strength. Examples of what can be done depending on the severity of your condition may include:

  • Wearing a splint to prevent over-bending the elbow.
  • Using protective padding over your elbow during your physical activities.
  • In severe cases, surgery to decrease compression.

Avoiding Fall Related Injuries

How Can Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY Help You?

With the heat being much more manageable now than in the summer, many people will increase their physical activity in the fall. While this can be great for one’s overall health, it can also lead to a variety of injuries. Fortunately, here at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, our Orthopedist Manhasset NY can help you prevent this from happening. For some tips on how to do so, please schedule an appointment

Keep A Proper Posture

One of the staples of the fall seasons is the falling of leaves. Any homeowner can attest to how problematic this can be for them. While trying to rake your leaves may not seem like an issue, if you aren’t careful, it can put you in need of a visit with our Orthopedist Manhasset NY. Bending over constantly while tending to your lawn can strain the muscles and joints in your back. To help prevent this from happening, our team recommends the following:

  • Using an ergonomically correct rake.
  • Keep your back straight when raking.
  • Don’t twist your back when moving the pile of leaves into a trash bag.

Stay Hydrated

No matter the season, it’s important to always make sure your body is getting enough fluids. As the weather continues to cool, you may not be as thirsty after completing an activity as you would be during the summer. However, don’t let that mislead you into thinking you do notneed to continuously drink water. Should you fail to do this, our Orthopedist Manhasset NY warns that you may begin to deal with the below symptoms:

  • Dry or sticky mouth.
  • Dizziness and nausea.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Headaches.

Inspect The Gear

One final thing our team would like to touch on is to inspect the gear when being physically active. Whether you are playing a competitive sport or completing a leisurely activity, having the right equipment will help keep you protected and out of the hands of our Orthopedist Manhasset NY. Examples of the gear to focus on include:

  • Wear shoes or cleats that fit snuggly and offer proper ankle and arch support.
  • Make sure all protective pads and helmets fit correctly.
  • If cycling, check to make sure the breaks and tires are functioning.

Schedule An Appointment With Our Orthopedist Manhasset NY

The Importance Of Bone Health

March 2020

The health of your bones places a crucial role in the overall functionality of your body. Bones are in a constant state of flux, as old bone is continuously being replaced by new bone. This period of constant change continues until around the age of 30. Once this age is hit, the body doesn’t produce new bone as quickly as it once did, meaning you’ll lose slightly more bone mass than you gain for the remainder of your lifetime. To keep your bones healthy as a result of this, our orthopedist in Brooklyn at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation would like to offer a few pieces of advice.

Treating Tennis Elbow

Although the name may have you thinking otherwise, tennis elbow is not an injury that is suffered only by those who play the sport. In reality, anyone who overuses their elbow joint is subject to developing this problem. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, our team is well versed in treating this injury. Our Orthopedist Garden City NY, can utilize a variety of methods that can better improve your condition. For more information regarding these treatments, please contact a member of our team

Symptoms Of Tennis Elbow

The first step in receiving treatment for your tennis elbow is understanding the signs of this injury. Waiting too long to seek out care can lead to permanent damage taking place in the joint. To help prevent this from happening, our Orthopedist Garden City NY, recommends seeking treatment when the below symptoms become present:
  • Pain on the outside of the elbow.
  • Pain that radiates from the elbow into your forearm and wrist.
  • Problems with one's grip due to pain.
  • Inability to straighten your wrist.

Immobilizing The Elbow

One of the most efficient ways to treat tennis elbow is for our team at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation to immobilize the joint. When the tendons in the elbow become overused, the pain and discomfort begin. They will need time to rest to help you make a full recovery. To facilitate this process, we may give you a brace or sling to keep your elbow in a steady position for an extended period.

Invasive Surgery

In more extreme cases of tennis elbow, surgery may be required to fix the problem. During the procedure, our Orthopedist Garden City NY, will remove the damaged section of the tendon, while the remaining portion is repaired. Due to its invasive nature, surgery will only be recommended if all other treatment options fail.

Additional Methods

Immobilizations and surgery are not the only two ways to treat tennis elbow. When you visit our facility for care, our Orthopedist Garden City NY, will perform a full assessment of your condition to determine which treatment method is right for you. After the evaluation, any of the below options could be recommended:
  • Icing the elbow.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications.
  • A series of range of motion exercises.
  • Referring patients to a physical therapist.
  • Steroid injections

Treating Your Meralgia Paresthetica

Have you recently begun to experience burning, tingling, and numbness around your outer thigh? Are these feelings of discomfort beginning to affect your everyday life? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, you may be dealing with the condition known as meralgia paresthetica. Here at Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, we’ve seen many patients battle with this issue in the past. Fortunately, our Orthopedist Garden City NY, Dr. Stanislav Avshalumov, is well versed in this ailment and can help get you back to full strength.

What is Meralgia Paresthetica?

Meralgia paresthetica is a condition that takes place when the nerve that supplies sensations to the outer thigh becomes compressed. This compression can be caused by weight gain, tight clothing, and in some cases pregnancy. Fortunately, our Orthopedist Garden City NY can create a plan that will help to resolve the symptoms you are experiencing. The most common symptoms take place on the outer portion of your thigh, and they can include the following:
  • Tingling.
  • Numbness.
  • Burning sensations.
  • Pain that worsens when standing or walking.

Risk Factors

Meralgia paresthetica takes place when your lateral femoral cutaneous nerve becomes compressed or pinched. While this nerve is a sensory one, it does not control your ability to use your leg muscles, meaning you'll still have full control of this area should this condition take place. Although meralgia paresthetica may not be able to be avoided at times, there are risk factors that increase the likelihood of you suffering from this issue. These may include the following:
  • Wearing tight belts, pants, and corsets.
  • Obesity.
  • Significant weight gain.
  • Pregnancy.
  • The development of scar tissue near the nerve.

Treatment

The symptoms of meralgia paresthetica do not need to last a lifetime. Our Orthopedist Garden City NY can craft a treatment plan that will provide the most optimal results. Such treatment methods can include any of the following:
  • Corticosteroid injections.
  • Surgery to decompress the nerve.
  • Recommending lifestyle changes such as losing weight and avoiding certain clothes.

If you’ve been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the knee, our Orthopedist Garden City NY will be there for you by providing quality orthopedic treatment.  Our team is well versed in this condition, and we will provide the treatment that is needed to help you manage your symptoms. To learn more about osteonecrosis, and how it can be dealt with, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Stanislav Avshalumov.

What Is Osteonecrosis?

Also referred to as avascular necrosis, osteonecrosis is a condition where bone tissue begins to die due to a lack of blood flow. This death of the tissue can lead to the formation of tiny breaks in the bone, and eventually, its total collapse. Even though osteonecrosis can affect anyone, our Orthopedist Garden City NY warns that it is most commonly found in those between the ages of 30 and 50.

Causes

Osteonecrosis takes place when blood flow to your bones has been interrupted. There are many different instances that can lead to this development. Below are a few examples of what can cause the onset of osteonecrosis:
  • Joint or bone trauma that damages nearby blood vessels.
  • Fatty deposits in the blood vessels that begin to block normal blood flow.
  • Medical conditions such as sickle cell anemia and Gaucher’s disease.

Additional Risk Factors

While some risk factors may be out of your control, others can be avoided by making lifestyle changes. Our Orthopedist Garden City NY highly recommends you consider these adjustments, as it could mean the difference between bone damage and remaining pain-free. Risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing osteonecrosis include:
  • Experiencing physical trauma.
  • Steroid use.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Certain medical treatments.

Treating Osteonecrosis

Seeking out treatment for this condition right away can mitigate the chances of long term effects taking place. Our Orthopedist Garden City NY is well versed in this area and can provide you with the treatment that you need for your recovery. Depending on the severity of the condition, any of the below may be utilized:
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Osteoporosis medication.
  • Blood thinners.
  • Range of motion exercises.
  • Electronic stimulation.
  • In extreme cases, surgery.

home exercises from orthopedist hewlett ny

The closures and limitations of gyms and other fitness facilities have thrown a wrench into the workout routines for many people. However, it is still possible to maintain both muscle and joint strength from the comfort of your own home. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, our team understands the important link between exercise and remaining healthy. To help our patients increase their chances of remaining pain-free, our Orthopedic Hewlett NY would like to share some simple at-home exercises that anyone can perform.

Diamond Pushups

  1. Lie flat on the ground placing your hands under your chest.
  2. Make a diamond shape with your hands and begin to push your body off the ground.
  3. Try to keep your back flat and core tight while doing so.
  4. Once your arms are completely straight, begin to lower your body back down to the ground.
  5. For optimal results, our Orthopedic Hewlett NY recommends repeating this exercise for 10-20 reps for three sets.

Squats

  1. Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Keeping the weight on the balls of your feet, begin to bend your knees and bring your body towards the floor.
  3. Keep your back straight, core tight, eyes forward and hips out on your descent.
  4. Aim to bring your knees to a 90-degree angle before returning to a standing position.
  5. Perform three sets of 15-30 repetitions.

Situps

  1. Lie on the ground with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Cross your arms over your chest.
  3. Keeping your knees bent and feet flat, squeeze your core and bring your elbows to the top of your knees.

The Benefits Of Orthopedic Telemedicine Care

telehealth from ortho in hewlett ny

With social distancing guidelines being administered across various parts of the country and the rest of the world, healthcare practices must work to keep both patients and medical professionals alike protected. At Advanced Orthopedics & Joint Preservation, we’re committed to providing our patients with care, no matter the circumstances. By utilizing telemedicine services as an option, our Orthopedic Hewlett NY can provide variations of this care without the need for physical visits. To learn more about telemedicine, and what makes it so beneficial, please consult with our staff by scheduling your online appointment

What Is Telemedicine?

As you already know, making traditional medical visits involves physically coming into the medical facility. However, for some patients, this is not a safe option. When you require care but cannot leave the house, our Orthopedic Hewlett NY can still help you with the use of telemedicine.

Telemedicine is used to simulate a physical visit for those unable to meet in person. Although this was first done using phones, with technological advancements, telemedicine now encompasses the use of video technology as well.

The Benefits

As previously stated, telemedicine is beneficial to both patients and practitioners alike. That is one of the reasons our Orthopedic Hewlett NY offers telemedicine services as an option for care. By doing so, we allow those who seek orthopedic care with us to reap the following benefits of telemedicine services:

  • Ability to receive care without needing to break the current social distancing guidelines.
  • Limit the need for time-consuming commutes to the doctor’s office.
  • The quality of diagnosis and treatment methods remain at the same standard of traditional visits.

Contact Our Orthopedic Hewlett NY
