After you’ve gotten your total hip replacement surgery, it’s important to care for your new hip to make a complete recovery. Here are some exercises that will help you during your post-surgical rehab:
- Walking – After your surgery, you’ll want to walk short distances in order to strengthen your muscles and condition your new hip joint for movement. You will initially use a walker or crutches. An orthopedist in Wantagh will advise you on how much weight you should be putting on your leg. For most people, this should be done initially three to four times a day at five to ten-minute intervals. As you increase your strength, you can walk for 20 to 30 minutes two to three times a day. As you near full recovery, regular walks for 20 to 30 minutes three to four times a week can help you maintain your strength.
- Standing Hip Extensions – This exercise involves lifting the leg that’s on the same side as your hip replacement backward slowly. You will try to keep your back straight and hold this position for two or three counts then return your foot to the floor. This is repeated ten times and should be done in three to four sessions a day for optimal results.
- Abduction Exercise – This exercise is done laying down and involves sliding your leg out to the side as far as you can and then sliding it back. This is repeated ten times and should be done in three to four sessions a day.
